DetailPrecision-tuned to capture low-end frequencies with stunning clarity, the Shure Beta 91A kick drum microphone packs an impressive punch in both live and studio settings. With its rugged, low-profile design, this condenser boundary microphone was built to be placed inside or directly in front of the kick drum, delivering pristine audio even at ultra-high volumes. The Shure Beta 91A traces its lineage back to the SM91, a boundary mic designed for the conference room. However, impressed by its reliability and solid low-end sound capture, audio engineers soon realized its potential as a kick drum mic—and an iconic duo was born. Expanding on the legendary performance of the SM91, the Beta 91A was purpose-built with the demands of the kick drum in mind. Boasting extremely high SPL handling and a half-cardioid polar pattern for maximum gain before feedback, this powerful mic tackles loud, bass-heavy sources with precision and ease. Tailored Frequency Response for Kick Drums With its high-quality half-cardioid condenser capsule and integrated preamp, the Shure Beta 91A yields massive low-end punch with plenty of attack. This intelligently designed condenser boundary mic was engineered to deliver powerful kick drum performances in immaculate detail, but its articulate low-frequency response is ideal for any bass-intensive instrument, capturing piano, cajon and other percussions with accuracy and clarity. Capable of handling sound pressure levels up to an astounding 151dB, the Beta 91A easily stands up to the loudest of drum sounds. The mic’s wide dynamic range ensures premium sound definition even at high volumes, beautifully preserving every detail of the performance. Half-Cardioid Polar Pattern Prevents Feedback The Beta 91A's tailored half-cardioid polar pattern provides maximum gain before feedback for true-to-life kick drum tone. This highly directional pickup pattern focuses on audio within a 60-degree range above the mounting surface, making this condenser boundary mic ideal for isolating sources directly in front of the mic capsule while rejecting unwanted sounds from the sides and rear. The result is a clear, full-bodied kick drum sound at high sound pressure levels without squealing feedback. With its effective off-axis sound rejection and superior feedback suppression, the Beta 91A is an excellent choice for high-volume situations both on stage and in the studio. Contour Switch Enhances Clarity and Attack Whether you’re looking for a natural sound or something a bit bigger and bolder, a two-position contour switch on the bottom of the Beta 91A provides an added level of control over the mic’s frequency response without the need for additional tools. The recessed switch allows you to toggle between flat response or a low-mid scoop. When activated, the low-mid scoop setting attenuates 400Hz by 7dB—mirroring the way many engineers choose to EQ the Beta 91A. Select the flat setting for a natural sound, or switch over to the low-mid scoop for an added low-end punch and heightened attack in the higher frequencies. Streamlined Design for Flexibility and Ease of Use With its ultra-durable low-profile design, the Shure Beta 91A is a rugged and stage-ready mic built for easy setup and use. It boasts a sturdy steel grille and die-cast metal alloy construction, making it a reliable companion on the road, and its built-in preamp and XLR connector help keep clutter to a minimum. Featuring a compact build and a flat bottom with a non-slip surface, the Beta 91A can easily fit inside or in front of a kick drum without the need for external mounting hardware. However, should you want to mount your mic to the inside of a piano or even your studio wall, it comes with mounting holes to securely attach it to the surface of your choice.
