DetailThe JHS Pedals 3 Series Oil Can Delay invites you to explore the unique sounds of a legendary effect, reborn in a compact and affordable package. Inspired by the vintage oil can delays of the past, this pedal delivers a distinctive blend of echo, vibrato, and slapback delay, perfect for adding a touch of retro character to your guitar, synth, or vocals. With its simple controls and versatile sound, the Oil Can Delay is an excellent choice for musicians of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals. A Nod to the Past–The Story of the Oil Can Delay The Oil Can Delay's origins trace back to the 1950s and the innovative work of Ray Lubow, co-founder of Tel-Ray Electronics and later Morley. Lubow's invention, patented in 1959, utilized a rotating drum filled with oil to create a unique delay effect. The oil served to stabilize the audio signal "charge," resulting in a characteristic warble and slapback echo. This technology was licensed to companies like Fender, Gibson, and Rickenbacker, finding its way into numerous amplifiers and standalone units. Morley continued to manufacture oil can delays until 1989, solidifying their place in music history. Modern Revival–Inspired by Nels Cline The JHS Oil Can Delay owes its existence to a chance encounter between JHS founder Josh Scott and legendary guitarist Nels Cline. At Wilco's Solid Sound Festival in 2022, a conversation about unusual delays sparked Cline's interest in an oil can style effect. JHS developed a one-off pedal for Cline, who was so impressed that he used it on Wilco's albums "Cruel Country" and "Cousin," as well as on tour. While not a signature pedal, the Oil Can Delay is a testament to Cline's inspiration and the enduring appeal of this vintage effect. Simple Controls, Versatile Sounds The Oil Can Delay features three simple controls—Mix, Speed, and Feedback—allowing you to easily dial in a wide range of delay sounds. The Mix knob controls the blend of the delayed signal with your dry signal, while the Speed knob adjusts the delay time from 100ms to 330ms. The Feedback knob controls the number of repeats, letting you create anything from subtle slapback echoes to soaring washes of sound. A toggle switch offers two modulation intensities, adding a unique warble to the delay that's reminiscent of the original oil can units. This intuitive control layout makes it easy to find the perfect sound for your needs. Built for Inspiration The JHS 3 Series Oil Can Delay is designed to inspire your playing and help you explore new sonic territories. Whether you're looking to add a touch of vintage warmth to your clean tones, create psychedelic soundscapes, or experiment with ambient textures, this pedal delivers. Its compact size and affordable price make it an accessible addition to any pedalboard, while its high-quality construction and versatile sound will appeal to players of all levels. Embrace the Unique With its distinctive sound and vintage charm, the JHS 3 Series Oil Can Delay is a pedal that will stand out on your pedalboard and in your music. It's a tribute to the ingenuity of early effects designers and a testament to the enduring power of unique sounds. Whether you're a fan of classic rock, experimental music, or anything in between, the Oil Can Delay offers a world of sonic possibilities waiting to be explored.
