While the Gibson Explorer electric guitar wasn't a huge success when it was first introduced in 1958, guitarists revisited the model and discovered its appeal as the years passed. Rockers began to embrace its futuristic shape and powerful sound by the 1970s, but during the hard-rockin' '80s, the model came into its own and was adopted by some of the greatest players of the decade. The '80s Explorer is based on the popular 1984 model with a fast-playing SlimTaper mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard.
